Le Mans Series 2006
Round 2. Spa 1000 Kilometers. May 12-14th 2006

Gallery

This gallery contains images from Round Two of the 2006 Le Mans Series, held around the fabulous Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium over the weekend of May 12th-14th 2006.

As he had in Istanbul, Thomas Erdos set LMP2 pole for RML in the #25 MG Lola EX264 -this time by almost a second and a half. After a brilliant start, which saw the Brazilian through to second overall, the race was stopped as a result of a serious accident. It was an hour before racing proper resumed, by which time the track had dried. The initial tyre choice was less well-suited to the new conditions and Tommy was unable to fend off the advances from several of the faster LMP1 cars, but a puncture 20 minutes before his sceduled stop had him limping carefully back to the pits for a new set. These transformed the car's pace, but the slow in-lap had cost almost five minutes and several places. Erdos fought back to tenth overall, third in LMP2, before handing over to Mike Newton. The MG's revival continued, with Mike battling through to fourth overall, second in class. Towards the end of Mike's second stint the recovering LMP1 Zytek took back one position overall, but Erdos, driving to the flag, was able to close on the LMP2 class leader, taking the chequered flag less than half a lap behind. The result moves Newton and Erdos into second place in the championship.
